An Alpine Greenhouse – Lushan Botanical Garden Greenhouse Project Passes Acceptance, Ensuring Rare Plants to Overwinter Safely
Project Overview
The Lushan Botanical Garden Research & Exhibition Greenhouse Project, jointly sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Jiangxi Province, was successfully completed in 2025 and has passed rigorous practical testing in the harsh alpine, cold, and humid climate !

This project comprises three specialized research greenhouses with a total area of 1,517.29 m², providing critical infrastructure support for Lushan Botanical Garden's participation in the National Botanical Garden System. The facility serves five core functions: ex-situ conservation, scientific research, science popularization and education, horticultural landscaping, and resource utilization.
Greenhouse | Function | Floor Area
|
Greenhouse 1 | Fern Collection | 345.09 m² |
Greenhouse 2 | Endangered Species Conservation | 683.20 m²
|
Greenhouse 3 | Rare & Exotic Plants | 489.00 m² |
Five Technical Challenges, Five Innovative Solutions

Winters in Lushan are bitterly cold and humid, with extreme outdoor temperatures dropping to -20°C (with a wind chill factor of below -30°C). However, the internal temperature of the greenhouses must be stably maintained at no less than 15°C to protect the precious plant collections. Our HVAC engineering team has developed a perfect solution through multiple rounds of technical research and development:
Thermal Efficiency & Energy Conservation
An advanced thermal insulation system significantly reduces heat loss, enabling the facility to operate in an eco-friendly and low-carbon manner.
Equipment Freeze Protection
Optimized equipment selection ensures stable operation under high-humidity and low-temperature conditions, eliminating the risk of winter operational downtime.
Space Optimization
An intelligent layout design maximizes the limited internal space, accommodating both plant growth and scientific research activities.
Cost-Effective Heating
Innovative heating solutions maintain the optimal temperature while effectively controlling operational costs.
Emergency Preparedness
Comprehensive backup plans for unexpected power outages safeguard the irreplaceable plant collections.

Project Significance
This project has successfully solved a world-class challenge in greenhouse construction for alpine, cold, and humid regions, contributing the "Lushan Solution" to China's National Botanical Garden System. Having survived its first winter test, the greenhouses now provide a warm, thriving environment for rare and endangered plant species!
