How Do I Develop My Fertilizer Program?

A precise fertilizer program is the foundation of high and stable yields in greenhouse cultivation. Many growers overlook how source water quality impacts nutrient solutions. A reliable fertigation plan requires close coordination of water pre-treatment, intelligent fertigation equipment and crop nutrient requirements.
First, test your source water. Calcium, magnesium and impurities in raw water will shift EC and pH levels and break your nutrient formula. For hard water or poor-quality water sources, an RO reverse osmosis water treatment system is a proven choice. It stabilizes inlet water quality and removes disturbances caused by fluctuating water conditions.
Second, set target parameters based on your crop type and growth stage. Seedling, vegetative and fruiting stages require different EC and pH ranges. Leafy greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and other cash crops each have their own suitable settings. Avoid using one single formula throughout the whole growing cycle.
Third, use an intelligent fertigation machine for automatic control. The FISMART fertigation unit shown in the picture supports multi-channel precise fertilizer injection. It monitors EC and pH in real time and adjusts the nutrient mix automatically to deliver consistent solution for substrate culture and hydroponics. Paired with the upstream RO water treatment system, this closed-loop setup minimizes manual dosing errors and cuts water and fertilizer waste.
Fourth, carry out regular monitoring and dynamic adjustments. Test drain solution on a routine basis and tweak your program according to light and temperature inside the greenhouse. Crops consume nutrients faster under strong sunlight, so you may increase feeding rates. Reduce EC during low-light, rainy weather to prevent root burn from over-fertilization.
SHG Greenhouse offers one-stop solutions including RO water treatment units, fertigation machines and complete irrigation packages. We customize fertigation programs for your specific crops and site conditions to build standardized, repeatable nutrient management workflows.

FAQ
Q1: Is an RO water treatment system mandatory? A: Not always. You may skip RO if your local water has low hardness and stable ion levels. However, RO is highly recommended for commercial greenhouses in hard-water areas. It keeps inlet water consistent and makes nutrient management far easier.
Q2: Should I adjust pH or EC first? A: Stabilize pH first. pH determines the availability of different nutrients for plant uptake. After pH is steady, adjust EC to control total nutrient concentration.
Q3: Can one fertigation machine work for multiple crops? A: Yes. The FISMART fertigation controller stores and switches between multiple preset recipes. You can save separate programs for different crops or growth phases and run them automatically.
Q4: How often should I update my fertilizer program? A: Base recipes can be preset according to crop cycles. We recommend weekly drain solution testing. Quick adjustments are needed under extreme weather such as prolonged rain or intense heat and sunlight.
